Hello UNCG research community.
UNC General Administration has opened up the Research Opportunities Initiative (ROI) for 2017. There are two different ROI proposal mechanisms. UNCG can send up to 4 pre-proposals in each category.
Internal timeline at UNCG:
- March 15 at 9:30 am: Q&A teleconference call for both funding mechanisms (see attached RFPs)
- March 16, 5:00PM – internal intent to apply deadline
- If more than 4 per category declare intent to apply, then internal review required
- March 24, 5:00PM – internal 2 page pre-proposal
- March 29, notification of proposals selected to represent UNCG
- April 19 deadline to submit pre-proposal to GA
- May 26 deadline to submit final proposal (if invited)
Type 1: UNC Research Opportunities Initiative (ROI)

- Advanced manufacturing
- Coastal and marine science
- Data science
- Defense, military, and securit
y - Energy
- Pharmacoengineering
Although inter-institutional collaboration is not a requirement, proposals that significantly involve two or more UNC institutions are desirable.
Type 2: UNC Inter-institutional Planning Grant (IPG) Program
Priority research areas eligib
- health sciences;
- agriculture;
- water and the environment;
- advanced manufacturing;
- marine and coastal sciences;
- defense, military, and securit
y; - pharmacoengineering;
- energy;
- data science.
Research projects in the humanities and social sciences are also welcome but are most likely best suited for Stage 1 awards (see attachment for details and examples). UNC GA encourages proposals that involve collaboration between STEM and non-‐STEM fields (e.g. a collaboration that spans education and water and the environment).
Pre-‐proposals will be accepted from any collection of institutions within the 17-‐campus UNC system. Additional collaborative partners may come from outside the UNC system, but at least two UNC institutions must be involved in each proposal.

Hello again.
In recognition of the fact that many faculty may be away and/or unplugged during Spring Break, we will push back each of the internal deadlines by about 1 week. Accordingly, the internal “intent to apply” deadline is pushed back to next week on Wednesday, March 22.
